7-Day Lisbon & the Azores
Upon your arrival at Ponta Delgada International Airport on the island of São Miguel, you’ll be met by a driver and brought to your hotel in Ponta Delgada center to drop your bags. The day is then yours to explore the cobblestone streets of the Azores’ largest city. Stroll down by the marina, visit the city gates, and wander through the marketplace.
After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel for a day-long tour of the Furnas region. The first stop will be in the beautiful seaside town of Vila Franca do Campo to enjoy a cup of coffee and a great view. Next, you will visit Terra Nostra Park to visit the award-winning botanical garden and to take a dip in the geothermal pools. The tour continues to Lagoa das Furnas, where you will be able to watch your traditional lunch of cozido das furnas being prepared with the geothermal energy in the ground. After lunch, you will continue to Miradouro do Ferro, a look-out point where you will see the archipelago’s oldest crater. On your return journey to Ponta Delgada, you’ll stop at the oldest tea plantation in Europe and at Miradouro de Santa Iria to take in the breathtaking views.
Your half-day excursion begins with a stop at a pineapple plantation to learn more about how the island’s delicious fruit is grown. After the visit, you will explore the western part of the island, stopping at some of the most scenic look-out points, including Vista do Rei, where you’ll see the iconic blue and green lakes and the village of Sete Cidades set in a large crater.
Today is yours to spend however you would like. Sleep in, take a dip in the hotel pool, or stroll through the old town. See Forte de São Brás, a Renaissance style fortress dating back to 1552 that now is home to the Azores military history museum. We recommend a visit to the Carlos Machado Museum, a former convent, offering exhibits on history and local art. Then take a walk over to the Jardim António Borges, an urban botanical garden that has free entry and is just a few minutes from the old town center.
Spend your free day exploring Lisbon using your Yellow Bus passes. These passes allow you access to the hop-on-hop-off bus, the local trams, and a boat to/from Bélem. We recommend a tram, followed by a walk up to São Jorge Castel to have a great overview of the city, then a boat ride to Bélem to visit the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém. While there, don’t forget to check out the famous Pasteis de Nata pastries!
